Achieving Meaningful Use

The Program

The 2009 HITECH program authorized payments to physicians (and some other health care providers) who demonstrate "meaningful use" of an approved electronic medical record (EMR). The purpose of the program is to encourage the use of EMR, thereby reducing healthcare expenditures going forward.

Providers can qualify under one of two programs: Medicare or Medicaid. Although the Medicaid program provides up to $64,000 over 5 years and includes nurse practitioners and other providers, providers must have at least 30% Medicaid patient population (20% for pediatricians). Therefore, most will qualify under the Medicare program, including:

  • Doctor of medicine or osteopathy
  • Doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine
  • Doctor of podiatry
  • Doctor of optometry
  • Chiropractor

Payments have already been received by many of our customers. This program is for real.

Getting Started

So, why should I start the process now? In addition to the obvious reason--to get paid sooner--there are important reasons to begin the Meaningful Use attestation process now. It is far easier to qualify now, than it will be in the future.

  • For 2011, must report for 90 continuous days
  • Last day to start reporting is Oct 1, 2011
  • Reporting is through self-attestation
  • In 2012, must report for entire year

Enrollment Process

  1. Upgrade your server to meet the minimum specs for eClinicalWorks v9, then upgrade to eClinicalWorks v9
  2. Obtain your CMS EHR Certification ID
  3. Each EP must have an enrollment record in Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System(PECOS) prior to registering for the Medicare EHR incentive program.
  4. Next, is the attestation process.
