Hardware Selections
The hardware required to run eClinicalWorks is readily available from various sources. You will need the following:
- Server--stand alone Windows 2008 Server, 64-bit (not required for SaaS model)
- Fax server--a server-class machine is strongly recommended for better reliability than the Windows XP option
- Desktop computers
- Tablet PC(s) (recommended for providers and nurses/MAs)
- Laptop computer(s) (optional for nurses)
- Fujitsu 6130 high speed scanner(s)
- Card scanner--recommended only for practices with significant number of walk-ins
We generally install Dell servers and desktop machines, which are reliable, affordable and supported by most IT companies. Regardless of the equipment you select, however, it must meet the following eClinicalWorks hardware requirements.

Tablet PCs
Tablet PCs come in two basic varieties: slates and convertibles. Slate tablets have no standard keyboard. Rather, they have a virtual keyboard that is used with a pen input device. Or, you can use the pen to enter text via handwriting. Sounds great, right? Only until you try it. Although the
What about convertible tablets? They look just like a laptop computer, but the screen swivels and lies flat on top of the keyboard, allowing you to use it as a slate. Because of their design they are larger than slate tablets, but the convenience is generally worth it.
Logan Solutions recommends the Lenovo x220 tablet PC to most customers. But, we also recommend getting advice from the experts. John Hill and his team at Allegiance Tablet PC Experts can help you select the right tablet PC. Call them at 215-441-5580.
What About the iPad?
There is currently no eClinicalWorks client designed for the iPad. That is, there is not an app that makes use of the unique iPad user interface, like large buttons designed for fingers, rather than a mouse pointer. It is, however, possible to use the iPad to access eClinicalWorks through a remote desktop (RDP) session. It is best to use this configuration for just reviewing information--in the patient's room, for instance. Inputting data in such a manner is cumbersome.
